Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People using such treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural changes.
